Massive waste sorting operation underway at Breede Valley Local Municipality | Infrastructure news

The Breede Valley Local Municipality (BVLM) has appointed by the Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) to update their Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP).

The primary objective of the review and updating of BVLM’s IWMP is to ensure that waste management practices in the BVLM comply with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No.59 of 2008).

BVLM has requested Delta BEC to perform a waste characterization study to aid the Municipality in planning waste minimization strategies, setting up recycling programs, and conserving funds and resources.

The waste characterization study is taking place from Monday 20 January – Friday 24 January 2020.

The Delta BEC team, along with 18 of the Municipality’s employees, will sort an estimated 14 tonnes of general waste over the 5-day period.

The aim of the study is to understand the make-up of the Municipality’s general waste collected for disposal from households.

Insights into the types of materials and the quantities of each type will assist the Municipality in gaining an understanding of the quantities of waste which could possibly be recycled, and as such be diverted from landfill.
