Pikitup, the waste management entity of the City of Johannesburg, confirms that the protest action has ended, and waste collection services have been restored across all 12 depot areas, whilst engagements are underway with ad hoc services casuals.

The protest, which disrupted waste collection in parts of Johannesburg over the recent weeks, affected several depots, with Randburg, Marlboro and Avalon among the most impacted.

Pikitup implemented backlog recovery measures, including deploying additional operational support and weekend collections, to restore services. These efforts have successfully reinstated services back to normal waste collection schedules.

The entity will continue to monitor operations and apply further recovery measures where needed to maintain service delivery and address any remaining challenges.

Pikitup apologises to residents and businesses for the disruption and thanks communities for their patience and cooperation during the recovery period.

The return to full service is a key step toward stabilising operations. Pikitup remains committed to reliable waste collection across Johannesburg and will continue working with stakeholders to ensure sustainable service delivery.
