Jo’burg could soon be facing water-shedding | Infrastructure news

Johannesburg Water has not yet responded to claims that the municipality may face water-shedding.

The Times newspaper recently reported that Johannesburg will soon struggle to maintain a reliable water supply to its more than four million residents.

According to a report by Johannesburg Water, unless consumption is reduced, supply will outstrip demand by next year, the paper reported.

The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Ralf Bittkau has accused authorities of not taking action sooner or finding alternative sources of water.

“We have to look at water harvesting in a big way because just looking at boreholes will not help. We are also facing the problem of acid mine drainage and ground water being polluted through that.”
