Tanzania’s “Big Results Now” initiative (BRN) has facilitated 16 784 water drawing installations in its current financial year compared to the 16 062 achieved over the last six years.
Speaking at the 9th Joint Water Sector Review meeting in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian Minister for Water, Prof Jumanne Maghembe, said that the initiative has resulted in nothing short of “a performance revolution”. The 16 784 drawing points deliver clean water to 4,2 million consumers. Prof Maghembe also stated that by June, this year the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP I) had managed to install no fewer than 32 846 water drawing points for the benefit of 8,2 million people, through an increased focus on rural water supply under the BRN initiative. The total accumulative achievement by June this year was 77 584 water points serving a total of 19,4 million people in rural areas. The BRN is a three-year government initiative that models a Malaysian development strategy which works through a specified timeframe for delivery.
Prof Maghembe also explains that the BRN aims to achieve 67% in rural water coverage by 2015. “The BRN agenda has galvanised the implementation momentum by enforcing accountability through monitoring of time-bound performance indicators, resulting in a revolution of performance,” he said. The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, Hawa Ghasia, said at the meeting that the pace of implementation of water projects in rural areas is satisfactory, especially after the introduction of the BRN initiative. “We have recorded tremendous achievements in just one year under the BRN initiative. We believe we will achieve even more in future,” she highlighted.
