The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management Department took delivery of five new Dulevo Veloce 5000 street sweepers from AAD Specialised Transport Solutions on 10 June this year.
These new street sweepers, can remove sand, leaves and litter from up to 25 km of kerb per day. In addition to ensuring cleaner streets, this intensified cleaning effort will mean that far less sand, leaves and general litter is able to enter the storm water system. This decreases the potential for storm water blockages and resultant flooding, while ensuring free-flowing, safer, traffic conditions during the wet winter months. This is especially useful in Cape Town, as many suburbs on the Cape Flats experience frequent problems with flooding during winter because of the sandy soil on which they are situated. Advanced technologyWith the residents of Cape Town in mind, these sweepers were chosen partly because they make use of a brushing and suction system that has been engineered both to minimise the dust that is thrown up and the noise created.
“As part of being a well-run city, we remain committed to taking a multi-tiered approach to keep Cape Town clean. These vehicles will be able to work efficiently on long stretches of arterial road, making these spaces cleaner, more pleasing to look at, and more environmentally healthy. “Furthermore, this function was previously performed by contractors. Being able to perform this function ourselves will therefore, in the long-run, result in a saving for the ratepayer. This is how we continue to work towards making progress possible, together,” said the City’s mayoral committee member for utility services, councillor Ernest Sonnenberg.
