Low dam levels

Water levels in Free State dams remain lower than they were this time last year

Water levels in Free State dams remain lower than they were this time last year.

The two big dams in the province, Gariep and Vanderkloof are currently at 51% and 68% respectively, while Sterkfontein is at 89%. There are several dams that are below 50% such as Knellpoort at 35%, Koppies 29% and Rustfontein 28%.

Krugersdrift, Allemanskraal, Armenia, Groothoek and Kalkfontein are all sitting below 20%.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, these numbers mean that despite the little rains received over the past weeks, there is very little positive impact on the dam levels.

Slight increase around Mangaung

The Department of Water and Sanitation has noted a slight increase in dam levels around Mangaung.

Mangaung gets its water supply from Welbedacht, Rustfontein, Knellpoort and Groothoek dams. These dams have collectively shown a slight increase of 1.2% over the past two weeks. This recovery could possibly be as a result of the impact of implementation of water restrictions within the municipality as rainfall has been minimal.

“The Mangaung Metro Municipality applauds its communities is for the cooperation in adhering to the water restrictions imposed since last year. Communities should continue to use water sparingly and explore opportunities to reuse grey water for gardening and cleaning,” the Department of Water and Sanitation said in a statement.
