Fifty seven million earmarked for sanitation in the North West province has not been spent and 33% of household in the province have sub-standard sanitation.
The provincial government says the two service providers appointed by the National Department on Human Settlement did not have capacity to deliver. The province is adamant that this should have been prioritised. But public protector Thuli Madonsela says she is going to engage the Human Rights Commission on the matter. North West Premier says it’s too hard comprehend why the money has not been spent as the lack of sanitation is these areas remains a concern in the province “On the question of the toilet saga we are going to involve the human rights commission as well because if you recall they were the ones that where looking at the sanitation problem and they had put government on term, in terms of what to deliver by when,” she says.David Seritelo who is a resident of Boitkhutso township says:”We are subjected to these conditions everyday and when it rains its worse. Sometimes we have to expose the buckets because the people who work with them sometimes spend days without collecting buckets.”
