The Western Cape will see a massive ocean clean-up this upcoming Easter. The clean-up programme began on Sunday in Hermanus and seven other popular beaches in the province will join in on the campaign over the next two weeks.

In an effort to contribute towards environmental sustainability, communities along the coastline are being encouraged by the clean-up organisers, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB), to assist with the campaign.

CCPB will also be educating beach-goers on ocean plastic and beach pollution.

“It is our duty to preserve our natural heritage for future generations,” Priscilla Urquhart, communications manager at CCPB said. “With these beach clean-ups, we want to instil environmental responsibility in each and every citizen so that coastal and marine life can thrive.”

Local municipalities in the Cape have also endorsed this initiative.

The Overstrand Municipality mayor Alderman Rudolph Smith is expected to join the clean-up with some of his mayoral committee members at Grotto Beach in Hermanus.

• Sunday, 02 April 2017: Hermanus Grotto Beach (10am – 12pm)
• Monday, 03 April 2017: Strand (5pm – 7pm)
• Sunday, 09 April 2017: Gordon’s Bay (10am – 12pm)
• Tuesday, 11 April 2017: Muizenberg – Surfer’s Corner (10am – 12pm)
• Saturday, 15 April 2017: Fish Hoek (4pm – 6pm)
• Sunday, 16 April 2017: Llandudno (7am – 9am)
• Sunday, 16 April 2017: Clifton (10am – 11am)
• Monday, 17 April 2017: Langebaan/Saldanha (beach to be confirmed; 10am – 1pm)
