Acting Gauteng police commissioner General Max Masha says a case of culpable homicide may be opened following a fatal train collision in Pretoria.

The collision, which took place in Mountain View Pretoria on Tuesday, left at least three people dead and over 600 injured.

Masha confirmed to the Citizen that police had opened an inquest docket to investigate the cause of the collision.

“If it’s found that there’s been negligence, a charge of culpable homicide might be opened,” Masha said.

Meanwhile Metrorail has confirmed that buses will be made available on Wednesday morning to transport commuters.

According to the train service provider it is still unclear when the trains will be back online as the time it will take for repairs has yet to be determined.

EWN reports that train services between Mabopane and Pretoria station will remain closed till all repairs are concluded.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng confirmed to EWN that the service provider would do everything it could to assist commuters with alternative transport.

“To our commuters that are already in possession of train tickets, what we’ll do because we know that the schools are opening today (Wednesday) and the majority of the Tshwane residents will also be going back to work, we’ll be able to make sure that we give them alternative transport services,” she said.

The train service provider also noted that it would provide support to the families who were affected by the collision.
