Engineers to add expertise to agriculture in NW | Infrastructure news

Four young agricultural engineers are set to add their expertise to the Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development Department in the North West as part of a drive to improve and strengthen agricultural engineering services in the province.

The appointment comes after MEC Desbo Mohono promised farmers and people in the province that she would do everything possible to bring much needed skills to the department in order to improve services.

“The newly appointed engineers will work directly with the contractors in the project that will be implemented by the department,” Mohono explained

According to Mohono the engineers, whose area of expertise is concerned with the design, construction and improvement of farming equipment and machinery, started working in the department in towards the end of January.

Qualified and accredited

The engineers joining the North West’s Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development Department all studied BSc in Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the only university in South Africa that offers the type of qualification.

On completing the course, students are required to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in order to pursue the best practices.

They were all previously employed by the national Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) as candidate engineers.

Improving infrastructure and standards

Commenting on the appointments new engineer Kholofelo Moloko, said he was looking forward to assisting with the restructure of engineering services within the department and improving the infrastructure and standards.

“We all have necessary work experience, which includes things such as designing agricultural infrastructure, conducting topographical and borehole surveys, compiling technical reports and tender documents, construction, monitoring and evaluation of engineering projects, and we are looking forward to working with and improving the livelihood of the farmers under the management of this department” Moloko said
