World Car of the Year Revealed | Infrastructure news

Volkswagen’s little Up city car has won the 2012 World Car of the Year competition.

It was chosen from a field of 34 newly launched vehicles from around the world, which was eventually narrowed down to just three cars – the Up ultimately having to fend off the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel of 64 top-level motoring journalists from 25 countries.

Here’s what they had to say about the Up: “The little Volkswagen Up has altered what we have come to expect from the city car segment.

“Of note are the responsive steering, sophisticated suspension set-up, new efficient engines and the quality of materials and finish. Never before in this economy segment have owners felt so premium.”

It might be considered a world car but at this stage Volkswagen South Africa has no plans to bring it to our shores.

More winners

In addition to the overall winner, the organisation also handed out category awards, in which the Porsche 911 won the World Performance Car award, the Range Rover Evoque the World Car Design of the Year and the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency the World Green Car title.
