Democratic Alliance MP Ian Ollis said that they would be calling on transport minister Ben Martins to implement cost-effective infrastructure projects.
According to Ollis, the ANC government has not harnessed the full potential of the transport infrastructure in South Africa. If the DA were in government it would prioritise 10 projects. These included the Moloto Rail Corridor. “Currently 600 buses transport people from Kwandebele to Pretoria every day on the country’s most dangerous road. A new rail line would be safer and faster for commuters,” said Ollis. Ollis also mentioned that there needs to be more competition to the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), by licensing more international airports.“This will reduce the cost of landing fees for international airlines and assist airfreight and logistics companies through greater competition.”
A new rail link in the Eastern Cape would also be prioritised. “The DA would support linking Coega, Motherwell and the central Port Elizabeth train station, bringing commuter rail services to new communities whilst also linking the Coega development to the CBD,” said Ollis. The funding of the 10 projects would not come from the national budget alone, said Ollis. Alternative funding could come from selling the assets of state owned enterprises (SOEs) or listing SOEs, with the state retaining minority shares.
