Years of meticulous global research and development has lead UD Trucks Southern Africa to launch the new generation Quon Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicle Range (EHCV).

The 17 different models in the range have always been designed and developed as smart workers, according to the manufacturers. Tailor-made for the challenging African road and operating conditions, the models launched locally are also a combination of extensive customer feedback and local engineering trials, they said last month.

The new generation Quon range supports environment-friendly technology; high levels of intelligence; ease of maintenance and operation as well as improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. All models in the range are fitted with the GH13 series engine, which is a 13-litre in-line 6-cylinder turbo-intercooled engine.

Within the Quon range, the GH13 engine is offered with three power ratings. These begin with the 270kW at 1 800rpm and 1 754Nm at bet-ween 950rpm and 1 450rpm. The next rating is a 300kW at 1 800rpm and 2 040Nm at between 1 050rpm and 1 400rpm engine while the most powerful kicks out 360kW at 1 800rpm and 2 448Nm at between 1 050rpm and 1 400rpm. Assistive new technologies include the new Extra Engine Brake (EEB), which offers 1 470Nm of braking torque at 2 300rpm.

One of the strengths of the new Quon range is its transmission system.  A selection of manual and automatic transmissions has been employed across the range to suit a range of applications. The ESCOT V Automated transmission has been specifically designed for enhanced driver comfort and safety and lower maintenance as well as greater fuel efficiency.

Numerous enhancements have also been made to the Quon range’s cabs to increase the driver’s safety, comfort and convenience. These include the user-friendly and convenient multi-functional display, intermittent wipers, as well as cruise control and keyless entry on the flagship GW26 490 TT model. To enhance the comfort inside the cab, the second bunk area has been upgraded from the previous generation with increased storage all around the cab.

According to Michael Marais of Pupkewitz Truck Centre in Windhoek, the horse and rigid chassis range in prices from N$880 000 to N$1,1 million and can be ordered from South Africa within one week. Assorted tailor-made trailers are also available but take longer to deliver, he explained.
