The China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) will build a new international airport in Guinea-Bissau, under a memorandum of understanding signed at the weekend in Bissau.

The memorandum signed with Guinea-Bissau’s government includes other additional works such as extending the passenger terminal, according to statements by the head of the Directorate General for Promotion of Private Investment (DGPIP) of Guinea-Bissau.

The Director General Bruno Jauad said that in addition to these two projects, the China Machinery Engineering Corporation will also build two fishing ports, one in the region of Biombo and a second in Buba in the south of Guinea-Bissau.

The CMEC, Jauad said, had also committed itself to building a power transmission line in Saltinho in the south, as well as roads and social housing in Bissau.

The MoU was signed as part of the meeting in Macau of businesspeople and official delegations of China and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).

Alongside the business meeting, the Guinea-Bissau government organised a fair to showcase the country’s products which, according to the Secretary of State of Planning and Regional Integration, Degol Mendes, piqued the interest of some businesspeople fro China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Mendes said the exhibited products are the riches that Guinea-Bissau has to offer and added that they correspond to the four drivers of development – agriculture and agro-industry, tourism, fishing and mining – defined in the “Terra Ranka” project presented at the roundtable with partners and investors held in Brussels.
