Officials in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape on Sunday said they cannot guarantee the safety of drinking water because of floods.
The coastal town is one of several areas in the province that was the hardest hit by last week’s heavy rains. At least 11 people died in the Eastern Cape due to floods. Authorities said they feared an outbreak of diseases because sewerage pumps were also destroyed. Ndlambe Municipality manager Rolly Dumezweni said they need help because their situation is desperate.“There is no way that the municipality can be able to deal with the major damages on its own. There are fears that the water could be contaminated.”
