Unitrans Agriculture and Mining Division has become the latest signatory of the Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association Responsible Care Initiative, thereby committing the company to implementing the guiding principles of this voluntary initiative of the chemical industry. This is the second division of Unitrans Supply Chain Solutions (Pty) Ltd that became a voluntary signatory.
“To ensure that chemicals are transported safely, it is vital that Responsible Care be extended along the value chain,” said CAIA Responsible Care Manager Louise Lindeque, adding that it was essential for dangerous-goods hauliers and logistics service providers to adopt management systems to identify and control the risks regarding the transport of dangerous chemicals”. Gert Brits, General Manager of Unitrans Agriculture and Mining Division, signed the Responsible Care Public Commitment on behalf of the division. He said, “Responsible Care will add value to this Business Unit’s integrated safety, health, environmental and quality system (SHEQ), which is priority to our business. We will continue to strive for excellence and to set the example by always putting safety first.”Unitrans Agriculture and Mining Division is committed to ensure that goods transported on behalf of the chemical industry is carried out professionally whilst considering the health and safety of their employees and the public, as well as the protection of the environment.
The Agriculture and Mining Division of Unitrans forms the platform that spearheads business growth into Africa. The Division specializes in primary agricultural and mining activities including material handling, downstream distribution and various ancillary services. The Division employs in excess of 3,900 people across 6 countries and operates a fleet of over 700 vehicles. The Responsible Care initiative is practised in 57 countries. The Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association, the custodian of Responsible Care in South Africa, has 144 Responsible Care signatories. Responsible Care is designed to have a measurable impact on safety, health and environmental (S, H & E) performance.
