Five Reasons Why South Africans Are Switching to Gas | Infrastructure news

South Africans are choosing gas in record numbers. Whether it’s firing up the braai, keeping the house warm through winter or powering a stove, gas has become a household staple for millions.

Here’s what’s driving the switch:

  1. The grid can’t always keep up. Even without load shedding, South Africa’s electricity supply remains unpredictable. Gas works independently of the grid, which means one less thing to worry about when the lights flicker.
  2. Electricity keeps getting more expensive. With Nersa approving a compound tariff increase of 18.36% over the next two years, more households are looking at what gas can do for their monthly energy bill.
  3. It does more than you think. Gas isn’t just for the braai. It’s used to heat water and spaces, dry clothes, run pool heaters and even power backup generators. With over 1,000 applications, it’s one of the most versatile energy sources available.
  4. You can get it almost anywhere. From petrol stations and hardware stores to dedicated distributors, picking up a gas cylinder is quick and easy, no matter where you are.
  5. It’s a cleaner choice. Compared to coal-generated electricity, LPG produces significantly lower carbon emissions, making it a more environmentally conscious option for households looking to lighten their footprint.
But as the market grows, so does the need to know what you’re getting.

With more South Africans buying gas than ever before, a growing market of illegal operators is exploiting the booming LPG sector by under- or overfilling cylinders, tampering with seals, or contaminating the contents. In practical terms, that could mean paying full price for a half-full cylinder, damaging your appliances, or even voiding your insurance without knowing it. Illegally refilled cylinders often carry fake seals, are past their safety lifespan, or show signs of tampering, none of which the average person would spot when grabbing a cylinder off the shelf.

Easigas has launched a new smart tamper-evident seal featuring a unique QR code across its full cylinder range. A quick scan with your phone confirms the fill date, fill location and whether the cylinder is genuine.

Each code is uniquely generated with a built-in expiry, meaning it can’t be copied or reused. And it works the same way no matter where you buy your cylinder, as long as its from an authorised Easigas distributor.

The seal itself has been designed with everyday convenience in mind. Gone is the traditional shrink-wrap that requires a knife or scissors. In its place is a simple single-release mechanism that comes apart cleanly with just two fingers. The seals are also recyclable and biodegradable, making them more eco-friendly.

Jeremie Tromp, CEO of Easigas, says, “As more South African households rely on gas, they deserve to know that they are not compromising the safety of their home, and that they are getting what they are paying for in terms of quantity and quality. That’s what this innovative seal gives them.”

The smart seal is now available across the full Easigas cylinder range.
