The City of Johannesburg has been recognised with the Digital Backbone and Municipal Network Infrastructure Award at OT Security First Africa 2026, held on Thursday, for its commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and responsible digital transformation.

As the City works towards becoming an African smart city, it recognises the importance of secure, resilient and future-ready digital infrastructure in enabling efficient municipal operations and improving service delivery to residents.

The award acknowledges the City’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its digital backbone and municipal network infrastructure in support of a connected and digitally enabled Johannesburg.

OT Security First Africa 2026 brings together technology experts and stakeholders to share insights, foster cross-sector collaboration and identify solutions to strengthen Africa’s technology infrastructure.

The City’s Group Chief Information and Technology Officer (GICTO), Aubrey Mochela, participated in the event as a lead panellist, sharing strategic insights into the evolving cybersecurity landscape and the need for secure, resilient and future-ready digital infrastructure.

Mochela said investment in technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is no longer an option but a new normal.

“As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, securing the systems and digital infrastructure that support essential municipal services remains a key priority for the City of Johannesburg,” he said.

He added that the recognition was a testament to the dedication of the City’s ICT professionals and partners who continue to drive innovation and responsible digital transformation.

“It demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that Johannesburg remains at the forefront of building a smart, connected and resilient African city,” said Mochela.
