The City of Cape Town has various initiatives within the city which aims to divert useful resources before they are landfilled and as a result, the City identified a need to keep the general public informed about their local recycling options.
Since the City of Cape Town’s website receives thousands of hits per day, officials decided to use this platform to launch a new web-based recycling app. The app will inform all interested parties (business and public) of where their closest recycling drop-off point or buy-back centers are and which service providers are operating in their areas. Recycling queries will also be mapped so as to show users relevant points of interest according to their location. A questionnaire has been published on the City’s website to assist it gather information regarding recycling collections, drop offs, or recycling companies in order to populate the app.The City has issued a press release requesting that these questionaires are completed as soon as possible as it intends to launch the app shortly.
Free business development According to the city, some of the additional benefits of participating in its database and app development programme include free marketing for SMEs and SMMEs, having contractors’ services endorsed by a reputable service provider, and possible increases in collectors tonnages due to additional free referrals.
