All systems Go! for Durban’s bus rapid transit system | Infrastructure news

The eThekwini municipality is preparing to launch the first route on its highly anticipated Go! Durban integrated public transport network.

The route, which includes a dedicated lane for the state-of-the-art Go!Durban buses, runs from Anderson Street in Pinetown to Bridge City in KwaMashu.  The route also runs through the R13 billion Dumisani Makhaye Drive and is set to be operational from June this year.

EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede says the new transport system is a game-changer for the City. “Globally we have seen how transport systems, have improved the liveability of the City and unlocked economic and social opportunities. It is exciting to provide our first route in an area that is in need of opportunities and development,” she explains.

According to Gumede the areas and precincts along the route have started to attract interest from investors and developers. “Along the routes, upgrades of urban precinct nodes with new lighting, street furniture and landscaping, have already begun to alter the way in which people use these spaces, making for much more user-friendly and safer environments,” the City says.

“Our message to commuters, operators and businesses is that as a City we can deliver the infrastructure and systems, but ultimately it is yours to embrace, look after and utilise for the betterment of all. This is a legacy project which means getting around the City and accessing opportunities will continue to improve,” Gumede notes.

The City says it will embark on a communication campaign in the second quarter of 2018 to create awareness on how the new system will work, so that by the time it begins, commuters fully understand how to use it.
