Minister of Water and Sanitation Gugile Nkwinti has signed an agreement with the Gauteng government that will see work starting on the long-awaited Sedibeng Water Treatment Plant project.

The project has been delayed due to protests from the community demanding jobs while budget constraints, have further delayed the completion of module six of the project.

In an effort to address these issues the agreement between Nkwinti and Gauteng government officials resolved that the community, through its Steering Committee, would be consulted on the possibility of jobs and other economic opportunities while additional budget was made available for the conclusion of module six.

The Department says it is also processing payments in favour of service providers who are still owed money for work undertaken thus far.

The meeting also agreed that detailed design work for the next module by Rand Water will resume so that when the budget is available, it should be all systems go as planning was undertaken in the past two years.
