Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, has strengthened its waste collection capacity with the addition of nine new 19-cubic metre Rear End Loader (REL) compactor trucks to improve operational capacity and support waste collection services.

The new compactor trucks, equipped with dual bin lifters, will strengthen Pikitup’s City-owned fleet and support waste collection operations. The acquisition forms part of

Pikitup’s progressive fleet renewal programme aimed at strengthening its own operational capacity and improving fleet availability.

Pikitup Managing Director Bukelwa Njingolo said the arrival of the new trucks represents an important investment in strengthening the entity’s ability to deliver waste collection services.

“The addition of these nine new compactor trucks is an important step in strengthening Pikitup’s operational capacity and building a more reliable, resilient waste collection service for the residents of Johannesburg.

“This investment forms part of our progressive fleet renewal programme and demonstrates that, while we are addressing immediate operational challenges, we are also investing in the long-term sustainability of the City’s waste management system.”

The latest acquisition builds on investments made over the previous two financial years. During the 2023/24 financial year, Pikitup received six REL compactor trucks, followed by a further 12 REL compactor trucks during the 2024/25 financial year.

The new trucks will be deployed to areas where additional fleet capacity is required, enabling Pikitup to strengthen collection operations and support greater service reliability.
