Tank level gauges | Infrastructure news

A leading Australian line of liquid level indicators for storage tanks and reservoirs has recently been launched in South Africa.

Yaktek level indicators, available from Rainbow Reservoirs, provide a precise read-out that does not need to be interpreted, with the indicator matching the level of the liquid exactly.

The underlying mechanism comprises a simple, mechanical float-weight-pulley system needing no power source. A weighted float and an external indicator are both connected by separate chords to a counterweight located between the two. Everything is in balance and level when the reservoir is half full. A rising liquid level will lift the float, lowering the counterweight, which in turn raises the external indicator. A falling liquid level will cause the weighted float to pull the counterweight up, lowering the external indicator.

There are several Yaktek variants of this basic mechanism, any one of which will fit any tank of any manufacture, whether plastic, fibreglass, galvanised iron, steel, concrete or timber.

The easiest of the three to install is the Levetator, a free-hanging indicator for use with water storage only. More than 50 000 reservoirs have been fitted with this model worldwide.

The second version, the Liquidator, is a refined model in which the counterweight is located outside the reservoir, leaving only the polypropylene float in contact with the liquid. This product is suitable for use with wastewater, oil, effluent, molasses, acids and chemicals.

The third version, the Level Devil, is a smaller version of the Liquidator, designed specifically for small tanks up to 1.8 m in height.

A fourth level gauge, which operates on a different principle, is the Dipstik. This indicator delivers 360-degree visibility, and comprises a rigid pole sliding vertically within a guide, and connected directly to the top of the float. The top-mounted indicator rises and falls with the float to indicate the tank level.

The gauges are guaranteed for five years and are constructed from corrosion-proof materials for reliable performance in exposed conditions.

All Yaktek indicators are made of polished aluminium, fitted with reflective red bands for maximum visibility. They can easily be seen from a helicopter and at night, making them suitable for applications such as in fire-fighting reservoirs.

Installation of all models is simple and quick, with no need to enter the tank. An experienced fitter will complete the installation in a few minutes and a DIY installer in less than one hour.

The level gauges are available ex stock from Rainbow Reservoirs and their authorised agents.
