Pump specialist Himadri Sen is set to deliver a short presentation on energy optimisation in pumping systems at this year’s South African Industry and Technology fair.
Pumping systems account for 20% of the world’s electrical energy demand. In industrial plants 25 to 50% of the energy usage is attributed to pumping systems. Several studies indicate that a significant proportion of pumping systems run inefficiently due to incorrect estimation of pump duty or improper pump selection. These studies also reveal that simple corrective measures can lead to 20 to 30% saving in energy usage. Energy optimisation in pumping systems has, therefore, strong economic and environmental imperatives. What to expect
This short presentation begins with an explanation of the characteristics of different types of pumping systems and provides simple guidelines for selecting appropriate pumps for each of these systems. Various international standards available for minimum pump efficiency are then discussed and control methods for varying the pump output are evaluated for their energy implications. The concept of “Life Cycle Cost” is introduced to analyse the implications of pump efficiency. There are twenty times more pumps in existing installations than are supplied new every year.
Energy optimisation in existing installations is, therefore, discussed next and the presentation concludes with different options available for upgrading and retrofitting existing pumps for optimisation of energy and reliability. Himadri Sen who has spent over forty years in the pump industry working for organisation such as Mather & Platt, Weir Pumps and Wilo SE. Himadri has a graduate degree in Mechanical engineering and a Post Graduate degree in Management from the Indian Institute of Management. He has been a director in the board of Mather & Platt Ltd and is currently the Managing Director of Pumpsense, a specialist pump manufacturing and services company. As a pump consultant, Himadri is a reorganised explainer on the subject of centrifugal pumps and he conducts training programs in centrifugal pumps in all parts of the globe. The presentation takes place on 22 May 2015 at 11am, Hall 2 Gallagher Convention Centre Midrand.
