IMESA and 3S Media sign historic contract renewal | Infrastructure news

The Institute of Municipal Engineering Southern Africa (IMESA) and 3S Media are delighted to announce the signing of an historic contract that continues a forty year publishing partnership.

IMESA promotes the interests of municipal engineers and their profession, and creates a platform for the exchange of ideas and viewpoints on all aspects of municipal engineering with the aim of expanding the knowledge and best practices in all local government municipalities.

From humble beginnings in 1961, IMESA has grown to represent over 1 000 individual members and a plethora of companies involved in the field of municipal engineering and the built environment, as well as representing several Southern African countries.

3S Media has been the proud publisher IMESA’s official publication, IMIESA, since 1975, when the publishing company – then known as Shorten Publications – was under the stewardship of its founder, John Shorten.

Shorten; a legend in business-to-business publishing in South Africa, and one of its founders, approached the institute with the idea of a monthly publication, having produced The Transactions, which covered the institutes then bi-annual conference.

He called it IMIESA (the middle ‘I’ stands for ‘Ingenieur’ and the ‘E’ for ‘Engineer’, acknowledging the then-bilingual composition of the profession). Today, IMIESA is probably the most successful publication in its industry, and the recipient of a number of awards.

Both the title and the company have come a long way since then, and now, under the stewardship Shorten’s daughter, Elizabeth Shorten, 3S Media is a multi-media powerhouse, providing digital, print and audiovisual solutions for multiple business communities.

Signing the contract in Cape Town earlier this week, IMESA President, Duncan Daries acknowledged the importance of the publication to the engineering profession, and the active role the institute plays in its ongoing success.

“I would like to thank Werner Bruhns and Jannie Pietersen for the care and attention they have given to our publishing partnership with 3S Media, and for providing direction in reaching our future goals,” he said. “3S Media is a worthy partner in our ongoing success and IMIESA is a strong reflection of the role of municipal engineering in South Africa today.”

“To be signing a renewal contract 40 years later, in a much-changed country, in a much-changed world is a wonderful reminder of the passion with which my father built the title and how IMIESA continues – through the written word – to contribute to the growth of the municipal engineering profession,” said Elizabeth Shorten.

“I would like to thank IMESA for the support and encouragement it has provided over the years, and for its generosity in providing direction and focus in a rapidly developing industry.”

IMIESA Magazine is published monthly and available to all members of the institute. Other readers include public and private sector stakeholders in the public infrastructure sector, both in South Africa and Africa.

The publication is available digitally and in print, and is supported by newsletters and website – www.infrastructurene.ws.
