The Department of Water and Sanitation has made inroads into the delivery of water and sanitation services in Tswaing Local Municipality, North West.

In January 2016, the department announced additional measures to support water and sanitation infrastructure delivery for Tswaing Local Municipality.

This was followed by the approval of a R1.9 billion business plan aimed at turning around water and sanitation services in areas that will eventually benefit a total population of 844 775 people within Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

Boreholes

The department reported that already in Agisanang Township in Tswaing, five new boreholes have been drilled to augment water supply to 2 421 households in Sannieshof.

“The boreholes have been connected to the Sannieshof reservoir and the community is receiving water that has reduced water tankering in the area.

“Some areas in Tswaing have had major improvement in water supply; in Delareyville four boreholes were rehabilitated and Kopela had three boreholes refurbished and 100 taps were installed,” the department said.

Sedibeng Water has replaced leaking panels on the elevated steel tank in Khunwana and Mofufutso 1 and 2, refurbished eight boreholes and installed a transformer in Delareyville. Nine boreholes were also equipped to meet the water demand in Letsopa Ext 6.

Furthermore, three new boreholes have been drilled in Geysdorp, one new borehole in Manamolela and new boreholes in Majaneng were equipped.

Pipeline reticulation sorted

“In all these villages, pipeline reticulation has been completed, while work on the erection of pump houses has already commenced. Other areas benefitting include Vresvedachgt, Deelpan and Ottosdal.”

Acting Regional Head of North West, Dr Tseliso Ntili, said the drought intervention strategy is as a result of Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane’s directive to turn the water and sanitation services around in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

“There is a need for investment in water infrastructure and that with better maintenance and operations the water supply will be sustainable for future generations,” said Ntil
