Tshwane to drop public transport fares - Infrastructure news

Public transport fares in the City of Tshwane will see a decrease with effect from 1 July, mayor Solly Msimanga said.

Msimanga emphasised the need for safe, reliable and affordable public transportation in order to address inequalities stemming from apartheid, as well as increased traffic congestion.

“Due to the legacy of apartheid spatial planning, poorer people live far away from job opportunities and thus spend a disproportionate amount of their income on public transport,” he said.

He added that the city was focused on working towards long term intermodal transportation integration.

He said that this would be achieved through the restructuring of land use management, provision of services and financing public transportation. He believes the restructuring will respond to the economic and commuter demands for public transportation.

Tshwane mayco member for roads and transport, Sheila Lynn Senkubuge, said that since they assumed office in September 2016, their administration has been overwhelmed with queries from bus commuters, calling for a review to the fare structure.

“In deference to our commitment to being an honest and responsive government we commissioned a cash investigation to determine the merits of the query as well as the current economic climate in which we find ourselves,” Senkubuge said.

Hence, fares were reviewed and restructured and are as follows:
