Despite difficult socio-economic conditions and financial pressures plaguing the industry, the Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers Association (SAPPMA) has managed to grow its footprint this past year.

This is according to SAPPMA CEO Jan Venter. Speaking at the association’s annual general meeting in Johannesburg recently Venter said that they looked back at the past year with a great deal of satisfaction at what had been achieved.

Upholding standards

Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers Association’s main focus fell on maintaining standards.  In addition to auditing over 40 companies, the association published South Africa’s first policy statement with regards to gas pipe and the practical application of SANS4437.

According to the association additional quality standards that would further differentiate SAPPMA members are also currently being developed and the organisation has finalised the latest edition of SAPPMA’s Technical Manual.

“Undoubtedly, one of our biggest successes this past year was the hosting of our recent PIPES XI Conference.  This was the first time that South Africa had the opportunity to host a dual international event of this magnitude for the plastic pipe industry, and we can say that it was a huge success by all accounts,” Venter said.

Celebrating success

SAPPMA used the AGM as on opportunity to reward excellence in the industry. Ian Venter, George Diliyannis and Jacques van Eck were recognised for their hard work and dedication on SAPPMA’s Technical Committee by receiving this year’s Merit Awards.

“It is clear that the unstable political climate in the country has taken its toll on the economic front – in particular the country’s infrastructure. Business conditions are not ideal and long term planning is a very shaky science at present,” Venter noted.

“Even so, we managed to not only survive, but in many regards grow and expand our footprint this past year.  This bears testimony to our industry’s perseverance and a resilient attitude that refuses to give up or compromise on quality in the face of adversity,” he added.
