CT sets aside R55m for Sir Lowry’s pass upgrade | Infrastructure news

Roads genericThe City of Cape Town started construction work on its R55 million upgrade of sir Lowry’s pass road this week.

The project, which will take place over 24 months, involves the rehabilitation of Sir Lowry’s Pass Road as well as the construction of new sidewalks, new storm water infrastructure, a new bridge and the installation of new traffic calming zones.

According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area East, Councillor Anda Ntsodo the upgrade will contribute towards addressing the transport inefficiencies that exist in the area.

The route was prioritised for an upgrade after increased traffic volumes left the road in a poor condition.

“More motorists are using Sir Lowry’s Pass Road (from the N2 to the T-junction) and Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road (from the T-junction to Somerset West) as alternative routes to get to Somerset West instead of using the N2,”explained the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron.

He continued:  “We are certain that the much-needed R55 million investment into the roads and infrastructure in this area will benefit and add to the safety of the residents of Sun City, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village and Mission Grounds.”

Ntsodo added that the project was an example of investments being prioritised for infrastructure which will benefit both the motorists and residents. “Upon completion, this project will also encourage non-motorised forms of transport. We, together with the residents, are looking forward to the enjoying the benefits and the improved safety that this project will bring,” he concluded.
