The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has been allocated R7.7 billion for its budget.
Ismail Vadi, Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport says every rand from the budget will contribute to making life more liveable and inclusive for citizens in the Gauteng City Region. The budget will be split between five key programmes, namely: administration (R359 million); transport infrastructure (R2.5 billion); transport operations (R2.5 billion); transport regulations (R300 million); and Gautrain (R1.9 billion). The department has prioritised the upgrading and rehabilitation of the K148 in the Eastern Corridor which intersects with the N3 and supports the proposed Tambo -Springs Logistics Hub.Solomon Mahlangu Drive will also be upgraded from the N4 to K54 in Mamelodi in the Northern Corridor and the P249/1- Phase 2 in the Northern Corridor which links Midrand to the North West Province.
Other road rehabilitation projects include the R55 from Woodmead Drive to Kyalami; the K60 along Waterfall City in the Central and Eastern Corridors; the dualisation of R82 in the Southern Corridor between Johannesburg and Vereeniging as well as the P88/1 between Sebokeng and Westonaria in the Western Corridor. “The Gauteng City Region, which accounts for the largest share of our country’s economic activity, needs a good quality road network to support its sustainable socio-economic growth and development strategy,” Vadi concludes.
