‘Thank SACP for toll scrapping’ | Infrastructure news

The deputy general-secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Jeremy Cronin on Wednesday said, the fact that the Transport Ministry will not start more e-tolling projects is evidence of the party’s power in government.

Cronin was deputy Transport minister during the e-tolling saga.

He spoke ahead of the SACP’s conference which starts on Thursday in KwaZulu-Natal.

Cronin believes the SACP has flexed its power on various issues.

“There are always battles around these things. My prediction is that we’re not going to see further elaboration on e-tolling.”

He emphasised that the African National Congress (ANC) needs to approach policy conferences with care.

“It’s to get the balance right between what a branch member could even be expected to know versus the kind of details that you require for some kind of policy.”

He said such conferences are vulnerable to what he calls “demagogic capture”.
