E-toll decision is expected by this Friday | Infrastructure news

The inter-ministerial committee (IMC) tasked with finding a solution to the e-tolling impasse will announce a decision on Friday.

Thabo Masebe, spokesperson for deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who heads the IMC, yesterday said: “Government believes that e-tolling is part of the mix of mechanisms available to address the problem of congestion and to raise the money for road construction and maintenance.

“A decision will be made at the end of this week. Last week we met with organisations like the Road Freight Association, Business Unity South Africa, Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance and the Black Business Council.

“Cosatu will be one of parties that we meet with this week.” Cosatu’s Patrick Craven said they remained opposed to e-tolling.

“Even if they reduce the toll tariffs, it will make the inefficiencies of tolling even more blatant as even more will then have to be spent on collecting tolls from motorists,” said Craven.
