According to the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA), the waiting time for cargo to be shipped or cleared at the in-transit storage area at the port of Dar es Salaam has been reduced to around eight days.
The reduction takes the waiting time down from double digit figures and has greatly eased congestion at the port, but it is still far above the world standard of two days. To reduce congestion at the port, a number of inland ports – Inland Container Depots (ICD) and Car Freight Stations (CFS) – have been introduced. As a result the cargo handling capacity increased to 15.4 million tonnes in 2013/14 from 13.5mt in 2012/13. The target of 18 million tonnes by 2015/16 seems more possible now than ever before, while revenue has also gone up by over 20% in 2013/14.
