The Department of Water and Sanitation working with the Department of Education in Eastern Cape is continuing to roll-out of water tanks, in its efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The second phase of the roll-out is aimed at the opening of school for learners in Grade 7 and 12, so that they get uninterrupted water supply to regularly wash their hands with soap as recommended by World Health Organisation. A total of 756 water tanks have been allocated to be dispatched to various schools around Eastern Cape and this roll-out was expected to continue throughout the past weekend. Of the 756 water tanks, 475 already been delivered and 265 have been installed and are ready to be utilised by the learners.“The roll out of water tanks to schools is in line with government’s efforts and determination to ensure universal and reliable water supply to all communities, particularly to areas faced with acute water challenges,” DWS said in statement.
The Department of Water and Sanitation signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Basic Education to realise access to water in schools. Rand Water was appointed to ensure effective implementation of the roll-out. Lindiwe Sisulu has emphasised that the provision of water tanks to schools and communities is a short term measure while the Department is working on the long term plans to provide adequate water infrastructure.
