The South African steel industry is a vital contributor to the country’s infrastructure development and economic growth, says Charles Dednam, Secretary General of the South African Iron and Steel Institute (SAISI).

The industry includes the manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers of steel pipes and associated products which have a wide range of applications, particularly in water and sanitation infrastructure.

South Africa faces significant challenges in terms of access to safe water and sanitation, particularly in rural areas and informal settlements.

According to the South African Human Rights Commission, over three million people in the country still do not have access to basic water supply services, and over 14 million people do not have access to basic sanitation services.

The aspirations and plans to improve the country’s water and sanitation infrastructure present significant opportunities for the steel pipe industry.

In South Africa, where water is a scarce and valuable resource, steel pipes play a critical role in supporting the country’s water infrastructure and ensuring access to safe and reliable water for all.

Steel pipes are preferred for bulk water transport due to their strength, durability, resistance to corrosion, and cost-effectiveness since they require minimal maintenance.

SAISI welcomes the R132.5 billion allocated by the South African government in 2023/24 and 2025/26 financial years for water and sanitation projects. This is a substantial investment, which will go a long way towards meeting the country’s commitment to providing safe drinking water and dignified sanitation for all.

The local steel industry is well positioned to contribute towards the installation of world-class infrastructure.

Steel pipe manufacturers in South Africa have invested in modern manufacturing technologies and processes so that they can develop high-quality products that meet the specific needs of the water and sanitation sector, such as being able to withstand high water pressure.
