Get ready for the 28th PPC Cement Riebeeck Berg marathon | Infrastructure news

Athletes, families and corporates are gearing themselves up for the annual PPC Cement Riebeeck Berg marathon, taking place on 3 August 2013. Set in the picturesque backdrop of the Riebeek Valley in Western Cape, the race has something to offer for all fitness levels.

The popular race attracts local and international participants and is a Comrades qualifier. Avid athletes are encouraged to enter the 42.2km marathon and walkers are invited to participate in the 21.1km half-marathon. For novices, there is a 10km run/walk and a leisurely 5km fun run for families. If you are not a running enthusiast, seize the opportunity to get away from the bustling city and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

This year, the PPC Cement Riebeeck Berg marathon celebrates its 28th anniversary. It has become an important event on the athletics calendar. The event is endorsed by Championship and was awarded Best Event Category in 2012, by Boland Athletics.

Morne Du Plessis, former Springbok rugby player, participated in last year’s 10km race. “My last race was almost 20 years ago and I could not have picked a better start for my come back. The friendly atmosphere, wonderful running weather and beautiful country side made the pains and groans of old age disappear with the joy of participating. On top of this my family all joined in and along with so many people from all walks of life and communities we had the best time. I would recommend this running experience to all who love the outdoors and exercise,” Du Plessis said.

General Manager at PPC Riebeeck factory, Johan Vorster said, “PPC is committed to positive changes to our communities and this initiative bears testimony to our longstanding social commitment, especially in areas of operation. The race is a serious marathon, but also a time for families to spend quality time together and enjoy the great outdoors.”
