Johannesburg Water‘s systems continue to show encouraging signs of recovery following the completion of Rand Water‘s planned maintenance programme on 2 June 2026.

Crown Gardens System

The Crown Gardens System continues to improve, with pumping to the tower ongoing. This has enabled the opening of the reservoir outlet, resulting in improved supply to customers within the supply zone.

South Hills System

The South Hills System is showing steady progress, with continued pumping supporting the gradual recovery of storage levels and improved water supply to affected areas.

Commando System (Brixton, Crosby and Hursthill)

Inflows into the Commando System have improved and continue to increase. While inflows remain slightly below the minimum target required for full system stability, the improvement is a positive indication that recovery efforts are progressing.

Operational interventions remain in place to support recovery across Brixton, Crosby, Hursthill, Auckland Park, Coronationville, Westbury, Sophiatown and surrounding supply zones. Customers in higher-lying areas may continue to experience low pressure or intermittent supply until the system fully stabilises.

Midrand System

Improvements have also been observed within the Midrand System, particularly in the Diepsloot and President Park supply zones, where storage levels continue to stabilise. However, challenges remain within the Erand supply zone, where recovery is progressing at a slower pace. Operational teams continue to implement interventions to support system recovery and improve supply.

Alexander Park

Alexander Park reservoir remains on bypass as part of preparations for upcoming structural repair work. While this operational configuration has been in place for the past two weeks, the incomplete recovery of upstream systems following Rand Water’s maintenance has resulted in poor pressure and intermittent water supply to some high-lying areas, including upper Eastgate, Bez Valley and upper Kensington.

Operational teams continue to monitor the system and implement interventions to improve supply as recovery progresses across the network.

The recovery currently being experienced across the network is anticipated and forms part of the normal system restoration process following a large-scale maintenance intervention.

Customers in high-lying areas supplied by systems that are still recovering may continue to experience low pressure or intermittent water supply until reservoirs, towers and distribution networks have fully stabilised.

Johannesburg Water continues to provide alternative water supply through water tankers in areas where recovery is still underway.
