The Molapo Bridge project in Soweto is nearing completion, bringing the Jabulani Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) closer to delivering improved connectivity, safer movement, and better access between Molapo and the Jabulani Node.

Designed to improve connectivity between Molapo and the Jabulani Node, the bridge crosses the railway line that has historically separated the two areas, creating a more direct and efficient route for residents and road users.

With major construction works substantially complete, attention has now shifted to final close-out activities, including:

• Completion of the parapet wall
• Finalisation of walkways and road crossings
• Road marking
• Installation and completion of street lighting.

Molapo Bridge forms part of the broader Jabulani TOD, which uses strategic infrastructure investment to improve mobility, strengthen connections between communities, and support the continued development of Jabulani as an important economic and social node within Soweto.

JDA Chief Executive Officer Themba Mathibe said reaching the close-out stage is an important moment for both the project and the broader transformation of the Jabulani precinct.

“Molapo Bridge demonstrates what strategic infrastructure investment can achieve when we focus on connecting people and places. By bridging the railway line between Molapo and Jabulani, we are creating a stronger physical connection to the Jabulani Node and improving how communities access opportunities, services, and amenities,” said Mathibe.

The project contributes to the City of Johannesburg’s broader objective of creating connected, accessible, and people-centred neighbourhoods where infrastructure enables mobility and socio-economic development.

Once completed, the bridge will strengthen the connection between Molapo and the Jabulani Node, while providing improved infrastructure for motorists and pedestrians through dedicated walkways and road crossings.

With the finishing touches now underway, Molapo Bridge is moving closer to completion, bringing another major investment in Soweto’s transport infrastructure nearer to the finish line.
