City Power Outage Disrupts Rand Water Pumping | Infrastructure news

City Power has reported a major power outage triggered by an incident at the Fordsburg Substation, affecting the Orlando Switching Station and resulting in widespread power loss. This outage halted pumping capacity at Rand Water’s Eikenhof Booster Station. The incident occurred at approximately 18h15 on Monday, 07 September 2026, resulting in the interruption of pumping operations. The Eikenhof Booster Station relies on City Power for its electricity supply.

The interruption in pumping operations may lead to the depletion of water levels at the following Rand Water reservoirs:

  • Waterval
  • Roodepoort
  • Krugersdorp
  • Weltevreden
  • Meredale
  • Witpoortjie
  • Libanon
  • Driefontein
  • Barnardsvlei
  • Rustenburg.
As a result, customers in the City of Johannesburg, as well as the local municipalities of Mogale City, Merafong, Rand West City, Rustenburg, Madibeng and the Royal Bafokeng Administration, may experience prolonged water supply disruptions. Various industries, mines and direct customers may also be affected.

According to City Power, electricity supply has been fully restored, however the areas supplied by the above-mentioned reservoirs are likely to experience low water pressure or intermittent water supply until all systems fully recover.

Rand Water is committed to providing uninterrupted, high-quality bulk potable water to ALL its customers.
